Tight Bounds for Low Dimensional Star Stencils in the External Memory Model

چکیده
Stencil computations on low dimensional grids are kernels of many scientific applications including finite difference methods used to solve partial differential equations. On typical modern computer architectures such stencil computations are limited by the performance of the memory subsystem, namely by the bandwidth between main memory and the cache. This work considers the computation of star stencils, like the 5-point and 7-point stencil, in the external memory model. The analysis focuses on the constant of the leading term of the non-compulsory I/Os. Optimizing stencil computations is an active field of research, but so far, there has been a significant gap between the lower bounds and the performance of the algorithms. In two dimensions, matching constants for lower and upper bounds are provided closing a gap of 4. In three dimensions, the bounds match up to a factor of √ 2 improving the known results by 2 √ 3 √ B, where B is the block (cache line) size of the external memory model. For higher dimensions n, the presented lower bounds improve the previously known by a factor between 4 and 6 leaving a gap of n−1 √ n! ≈ n e .

Tight Lower Bounds for Query Processing on Streaming and External Memory Data
It is generally assumed that databases have to reside in external, inexpensive storage because of their sheer size. Current technology for external storage systems presents us with a reality that performance-wise, a small number of sequential scans of the data is strictly preferable over random data accesses. Database technology — in particular query processing technology — has developed around...
متن کاملRobust Identification of Smart Foam Using Set Mem-bership Estimation in A Model Error Modeling Frame-work
The aim of this paper is robust identification of smart foam, as an electroacoustic transducer, considering unmodeled dynamics due to nonlinearities in behaviour at low frequencies and measurement noise at high frequencies as existent uncertainties. Set membership estimation combined with model error modelling technique is used where the approach is based on worst case scenario with unknown but...
متن کاملTime-Dependent Real-Space Renormalization Group Method
In this paper, using the tight-binding model, we extend the real-space renormalization group method to time-dependent Hamiltonians. We drive the time-dependent recursion relations for the renormalized tight-binding Hamiltonian by decimating selective sites of lattice iteratively. The formalism is then used for the calculation of the local density of electronic states for a one dimensional quant...
متن کاملMore inequalities for Laplacian indices by way of majorization
The n-tuple of Laplacian characteristic values of a graph is majorized by the conjugate sequence of its degrees. Using that result we find a collection of general inequalities for a number of Laplacian indices expressed in terms of the conjugate degrees, and then with a maximality argument, we find tight general bounds expressed in terms of the size of the vertex set n and the average degree dG...
متن کاملSparse Matrix Computations and their I/O Complexity
For many programs in high performance computing, but also in every day computational tasks, the performance bottleneck is caused by memory accesses instead of CPU time. To tackle this problem in a theoretical way, the I/O-model (external memory model) was introduced which models a fast internal memory (cache) of limited size where computations are performed, and an infinite external memory (dis...
